Billboard or poster design

Billboard or poster is printed media of bigger size, most often used to promote various products, services or events.

Billboard or poster design is successful when its message is perceived by drivers driving at average speed. Billboard design has one rule “7 words or less!” because that’s what average passenger can read in a moment. Exemptions are made, depending on client if he/she wants more information.

Basic guidelines of billboard design are:

  • High quality photos – high resolution (300 dpi)
  • Information quantity – it sends one message that should be brief and clear, ideally up to seven words so it could be perceived and read from driving vehicle. So it’s necessary to consider that media is visible only for a few seconds.
  • Contrast – billboard should be clearly visible and readable from distance, most often from moving vehicle. Meaning, color of background is important, color of text also and their relation.
  • Typography or fonts – characters have to be easily recognizable and readable
